Review: Lough Rynn Castle Estate & Gardens

lough rynn weddings

Welcome to my review of Lough Rynn Castle Estate & Gardens. There are visits that impress you, and then there are visits that stay with you. My time at Lough Rynn Castle Estate & Gardens firmly falls into the second category.

As part of my trip visiting some of Leitrim’s finest wedding venues, this was my first-ever visit to Lough Rynn Castle Estate & Gardens and I can honestly say the photographs did not prepare me for what I experienced in person.

I first became aware of Lough Rynn Castle Estate & Gardens many years ago through Brian O’ Driscoll and Amy Huberman’s wedding and then again with Jennifer Wrynne’s more recently. The photos looked amazing, but nothing compares to seeing it in person.

First impressions: a castle… and then that lake

Driving up, you’re immediately struck by the grandeur of the castle itself. It’s impressive, stately and unapologetically elegant. But then you walk around the other side and the whole estate opens up to reveal the lake, the woodlands and the sheer scale of the grounds, and it takes your breath away.

This is where Lough Rynn really comes into its own. It’s dramatic, yes, but it’s also calm, private and romantic.

Inside the castle: history at every turn

Stepping inside, you’re surrounded by original castle features that instantly ground the venue in its history. One of my favourite spaces, and a real standout, is the Baronial Hall, where guests are guided on arrival.

This room houses one of the oldest freestanding fireplaces in the country, and the bay windows frame stunning views over Lough Rynn and the lawns beyond. It’s atmospheric and the kind of space where you can’t help but slow down and soak it all in.

The lounges weave into one another, eventually guiding you back toward the reception spaces. Along the way, you’ll pass the Cocktail Bar, perfect for guests who prefer a drink on draft, and a series of beautifully layered rooms that encourage mingling without ever feeling crowded.

The Blue Room & the John McGahern Library

I had the pleasure of enjoying lunch in the Blue Room, designed by the late Caitriona Hanly, who left her mark on many areas of the castle. It’s easy to see why afternoon tea here is so popular, it’s a joy to sit in.

As someone who loves a venue with a story, the John McGahern Library (formerly the old kitchen) was another highlight. The original meat hooks still hang from the ceiling, and you can clearly see where food deliveries once entered the castle. Now reimagined as a library, it can also be used as an intimate breakfast space, and it’s full of character.

Ceremony options: inside, outside, and everything in between

Lough Rynn Castle Estate & Gardens offers a wide range of ceremony options, giving couples real flexibility.

  • Many couples choose the surrounding churches
  • For on-site ceremonies, you can say your vows outdoors on the lawns, overlooking the lake and woodland (weather permitting)
  • There are also elegant indoor ceremony spaces.

Aisling and the team are deeply experienced and guide couples through every detail, including guiding you through ceremony logistics.

Gardens, grounds & unforgettable photo backdrops

I was taken on a tour of the gardens by concierge Martin, who chauffeured me through the estate by buggy while sharing the story of the land, its biodiversity and heritage.

The gardens are immaculately maintained, with over 300 acres to explore. The kitchen team grow as much produce as possible on site, a lovely detail that feeds directly into the quality of food on the plate.

One of my favourite spots is a small turret overlooking the lake, a place where many engagements have taken place. You can even book it privately. It’s incredibly special, and just one of countless photo backdrops across the estate.

You will not be short of locations for wedding photographs here.

Dining & the ballroom

Food at Lough Rynn is exceptional, with the Sandstone Restaurant widely regarded for its quality and locally sourced menus. Wedding packages are built bespoke around what couples actually need, rather than forcing you into a rigid structure.

The Earl of Leitrim Grand Ballroom, located to the side of the original castle, introduces a more contemporary space for up to 360 guests, while still feeling elegant and refined. High ceilings, beautiful chandeliers, antique mirrors and floor-to-ceiling windows flood the room with natural light and woodland views.

The bar is within the room, there’s ample space for dancing, and once dinner begins, you and your guests truly have a world of your own.

Accommodation & the bridal suite

I stayed overnight and had one of the best night’s sleep I’ve had in quite some time (always a good sign!)

Guest accommodation options are excellent, including rooms in the old stables, which are particularly spacious. In 2026, Lough Rynn will be unveiling their biggest project yet. They are undergoing an expansion as we speak and this will include an additional 55 guest rooms, spa and additional facilities.

The bridal suite is regal and unforgettable. A traditional four-poster bed, spectacular views, mirrors that transform into televisions, and then… the bathroom.
You’ll see it in the gallery, it’s genuinely epic.

A multi award-winning venue, for very good reason

Lough Rynn Castle Estate & Gardens is a multi award-winning venue, most recently named Overall Venue of the Year 2025 and Hotel Venue of the Year – Connaught. After my visit, it’s easy to see why.

The team are warm, knowledgeable and deeply experienced. They understand not just how to run a wedding, but how to support couples through the finer details that make all the difference.

Final thoughts

If you’re dreaming of a castle wedding that offers privacy, heritage, world-class food and unforgettable scenery, Lough Rynn Castle Estate & Gardens deserves a very serious place on your shortlist.
