Cascina Capitanio at Al Castello: A Private Italian Wedding Hideaway Near Milan

I recently took a trip to Milan to visit two wedding venues owned by the same family, and over two articles, I’m going to bring you through both. First up is Cascina Capitanio at Al Castello and honestly, what a way to start.

When we arrived into Milan Malpensa Airport, we were collected by a driver and brought straight to the venue. The drive itself was beautiful. This part of Italy is full of greenery, with vineyards, rice fields and views towards the Alps in the distance. You instantly get that sense of being somewhere very different.

By the time we arrived, it was late, but the welcome was still so warm. We were greeted by a very lovely parrot called Fly, which immediately made the whole place feel homely and full of character. Our room had that authentic Italian charm, complete with a four-poster bed and the loveliest welcome plate of cheese, prosciutto and prosecco waiting for us. Not a bad start at all!

The next morning, we had breakfast in a rustic kitchen setting, and this was not your standard hotel breakfast. You help yourself to a gorgeous spread of Italian favourites, and it all felt relaxed, informal and very much like you were staying in someone’s beautiful home.

The Secret Garden

After breakfast, we were brought on a showaround, but this wasn’t just any showaround, there was a real wedding taking place, so I got to see the venue fully alive.

At Al Castello, you step outside into an area with a residents’ pool, jacuzzi and sauna. At the end, there are gates leading to a walled garden. Once those gates open, you are brought into what feels like a secret garden and there it is, Cascina Capitanio.

Wow. What can I say? It is such a special space.

There is a spacious lawn, perfect for guests to mingle, surrounded by trees, flowers and a beautiful greenhouse where guests can enjoy drinks and food. At the end of the garden, tucked among the trees, is a secluded ceremony area. It comes ready with benches and natural shade, which is such a bonus for an outdoor Italian ceremony.

The Italian Aperitif Experience

Following the ceremony, guests are invited to enjoy an aperitif  and this is where Italian weddings really show their magic.

This is not just a few trays of finger food. This is a full gourmet experience and such a strong point of difference compared to a typical Irish wedding format. It creates this lovely, easy flow of food, drinks and conversation from the very beginning.

There was a dedicated cheese room — yes, an actual cheese room. There was also a pizza room and an area for arancini. Guests were mingling with food in hand, Aperol Spritz flowing, and the drinks were laid out beautifully. The couple had a DJ playing in the background, and the whole atmosphere was relaxed, elegant and full of energy.

Dinner Under One Long Table

After an hour or so, guests were called to take their seats in the dining room. Everyone sat together at one long table, chatting, laughing and fully immersed in the experience.

The meal was a true Italian feast, with multiple courses and local wine flowing. The local favourite is Barolo, and trust me, it was going down very nicely.

The venue can host anything from 20 to 250 guests, with plenty of options depending on numbers, weather and the style of celebration you want. Whether it’s hot, cold or raining, there are adaptable spaces so the day still flows beautifully.

As the evening moves on, the disco and dancing are prepared, and guests can party into the night.

The Food Is the Real Flex

For me, one of the biggest standouts at Cascina Capitanio is the food.

I had the joy of dining with Sabrina, the owner, and we had five courses. I still cannot stop thinking about the ravioli they make on site. In fact, pretty much everything is made there and sourced locally, and you can absolutely taste that in every bite.

I may have already told Sabrina that she needs to bring me some of that ravioli when she comes back to Ireland for The Wedding Show at the RDS!

One thing I really want to call out for couples considering Cascina Capitanio is how easy the team make it to explore the venue properly. Couples who are interested are very welcome to come and visit, and they offer a special weekend rate for those travelling over.
